PANGO
Havana, Cuba
1971
Barbaro M. Reyes Mesa, as Pango's civil name is, was born on November 15, 1971 in Matanzas, Cuba. He was interested in fine arts and photography at an early age. In 1996 he completed his master's degree in fine arts. He prefers to paint his pictures with coloured pencils and strong acrylic paints on cardboard. He often combines bright colours with gold, silver and brass colours. This makes the colours seem even more concise in their colourfulness.
In addition to brushes and colored pencils, Pango also uses third-party materials such as newspapers or even used food ration stamps, which are woven into the pictures as collage. His expressive pictures often revolve around Afro-Cuban faces or Cuban everyday life in all its, often unembellished, facets. His pictures are supported by equally expressive picture titles.
But maybe Pango is best at all when it comes to abstract art. Only few artists have his stylistic confidence when it comes to image composition, use of colors and shapes. His abstract compositions are Cuban art at its best!
