WAYACON
Cienfuegos, Cuba
1931

The artist Wayacon, with civil name Julian Espinosa Rebollido, was born in Guanaroca, Cienfuegos in 1931. He never attended art school and taught himself as an autodidact. He is one of the most dazzling painters in Cuba. His naive, childlike painting style is unique, typical Wayacon. He never let himself be influenced by any art trends or critics and always remained true to himself. He loves strong unmixed primary colors and likes to work with paint on wood and other objects. By the way, Wayacon means a fish that swims in all waters, just like him, the artist says. He has been everywhere in Cuba throughout his life and nowhere at home, a nomad of Cuba.
